Obama's Afghan announcement |

The BBC has been told by senior White House officials that the President Obama will announce he's sending 30,000 troops to Afghanistan over the next six months.
The surprise is not in the numbers, although some had predicted more, but the speed. It suggests that he wants a quick victory, and then a phased exit.

Ways you can take action on World AIDS Day |

Today is World AIDS Day, a day of remembrance for those who have died and a day to promote both awareness of those living with the disease and ways to find a cure. Yesterday, Nike and (RED) announced a unique partnership, “Lace Up. Save Lives,” to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa, where two out of three AIDS patients are now living. As part of the initiative, people all over the world can buy special red shoelaces, with proceeds being split equally between The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and soccer-based community programs that are intended to educate people about AIDS. The cost of the laces is only $4. The initiative is two-pronged: The Global Fund provides medicine for those living with HIV, while the soccer-based programs help people understand more about AIDS and how to prevent its spread.

Saints stay unbeaten with 38-17 win over Patriots |
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With one pinpoint throw after another, Drew Brees put New Orleans' pursuit of perfection into overdrive and left Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the dust.Brees threw for a season-high 371 yards and five touchdowns, carving up coach Bill Belichick's defense like few quarterbacks ever have in the Saints' 38-17 victory Monday night."It only counts for one win on the stat sheet, but emotionally, those types of wins can mean a little more," Brees said. "Anytime you can win, and win that way, it builds confidence for you."By harassing Brady all game and routing one of the NFL's top powers, the Saints joined the Indianapolis Colts at 11-0 — the first time two NFL teams have opened with that many consecutive wins in the same season. The convincing victory left little doubt about New Orleans' credentials as the Saints try to match the Patriots' 16-0 regular-season mark in 2007.

FIFA Set To Fast-Track Extra Officials In Time For World Cup |
FIFA will announce tomorrow the decision to appoint five officials to each match; positioning an extra referee behind each goal-line, according to a report in The Guardian. The report states that an emergency meeting has been called as a response to the Republic of Ireland's grievances over the goal, assisted by Thierry Henry's handball, that proved pivotal in the nation's World Cup play-off defeat by France, who progressed to the finals of the tournament in South Africa. An executive committee member from FIFA is reported to have said: "The mood is that something has to be done and the easiest solution is to bring in the extra assistant referees."The Football Associations of both England and Scotland are also expected to endorse the procedure. Gordon Smith, the chief executive of the Scottish FA, has already voiced his approval, while the English FA will not want to harm their bid to host the 2018 World Cup.The new system is currently in an experimentation phase, and was a brainchild of UEFA president Michel Platini.
